The invention is directed at an apparatus for automatically polishing the blade projection of knives (60) with a blade foot projecting relatively unaided, said apparatus having a polishing disc (42) which acts, on both sides, with its circumferential face, on the blade projection region of the knife blade, in the meantime held in a clamping device (58), and, during this process, performs an oscillating feed movement. In this arrangement, a plurality of pairs of polishing discs (42) which can be advanced towards one another are arranged in successive work stations passed through by the same clamping device (58), of which at least individual polishing discs are able to assume an axial position inclined with respect to a longitudinal mid-plane of the blade (62) normal to the plane of the blade. An improved polishing effect in this critical region is thus achieved, with which ghost lines can be made to disappear. <IMAGE>
