NEW MATERIAL:A propionic acid 2'-benzothiazole thioester. (R1 is CN, CF3, halogen or NO2; R2 is H, halogen or CN; R3 is thiazoline or benzothiazole linked at the 2-position; A is CH or N). EXAMPLE:2-[4-(4-Cyanophenoxy)phenoxy]propionic acid 2'-benzothiazole thioester. USE:A selective herbicide which has extremely shortened time required for effect development in foliar treatment after germination of weeds and shows excellent selectively herbicidal effects in both solid treatment before germination and foliar treatment after germination against weeds, especially on gramineous weeds without causing phytotoxicity to cultivated plants. PREPARATION:A compound shown by formula II (Hal is halogen) is reacted with a compound shown by formula HS-R3 or a compound shown by formula III is reacted with a compound shown by formula IV to give a compound shown by formula I.
