A punching device 2 is used for making recesses on the tread side of the supporting members 3 of gratings 1 .The punching device 2 is guided such that it can move up and down in a direction perpendicular to the feed plane of the grating (arrow P1) and is formed from several rows of individual punching tool pairs 10 acting horizontally along the rows. The rows are located one behind the other in the grating feed direction and extend transversely across the grating feed path. The punching device is moved up and down between inoperative and operative positions in cycles by controlled devices, such as spindles 8, and a cyclic relative movement is produced between the grating 1 and punching device 2 by further controlled devices, such as catches 27 on reciprocating carriages 25,26 or the feed device of a grating welding machine. A punch (21, Fig. 3) of each tool pair 10 is driven and returned by hydraulic pistons (13,12), a profiled strip (23) on the punch body restoring the waste to the recess on the return stroke. <IMAGE>
