PURPOSE:To automatically determine an exposure quantity in accordance with picture information of an original picture by generating and storing a classification table on a basis of characteristic values detected from a reference original picture and using this classification table to classify sets of divided picture elements into plural sets of virtual picture elements each of which consists of >=0 picture elements. CONSTITUTION:A color negative film is used as the original picture, and picture information including a negative is divided into plural picture elements by a two-dimensional image sensor like a CCD, and characteristic values are detected in picture element units, and the characteristic value detection method is used to generate and store the classification table on a basis of characteristic values detected from the reference original picture on the color negative film. The generated classification table is used to classify sets of divided picture elements into plural sets of virtual picture elements each of which consists of >=0 picture elements, and an information group corresponding to each virtual picture element unit is obtained in accordance with characteristic values such as the intensity of light detected in picture element units after division of the original picture. At least a part of obtained information groups is used to determine the exposure quantity and/or the exposure correction quantity of the original picture.
