In a method of guiding sterile air in an operation room the air stream is initially guided in a narrowed jet which is then widened above the operation area so as to correspond to the respective dimensions of the operation area. The cross-sectional dimensions of the air jet are initially between 15 and 30 cm. The operation jet is only widened at a distance of 20 to 40 cm above the operation area. Changes in the distance between the operation area and the air outlet are measured and lead, via a computer, to control of the air stream in order to ensure the desired jet conditions at the operation area. <IMAGE>
