PURPOSE:To stabilize recording magnetization in a vertical direction and to obtain a recording medium having excellent recording and reproducing characteristics by constituting the medium in such a manner that the saturation magnetization of the magnetic recording film provided on a soft magnetic film in the upper part of a substrate is small in the surface part thereof and increase toward the substrate. CONSTITUTION:The intensity of the magnetic lines of force which a magnetic head 1 senses is lower in the case in which said head is distant from the recording magnetization 3 than in the case in which the head is near the same. The head operates without being much affected by the intensity of the magnetic lines 2 of force that the head senses by increasing the recording magnetization 3 toward the substrate. The recording magnetization is thus stabilized and the noise and waveform distortion are suppressed, by which the recording medium having the excellent recording and reproducing characteristics is obtd.
