PURPOSE:To increase recording density by providing FM modulator and demodulator with digital signal input terminals to record digital signal directly. CONSTITUTION:The titled VTR device is constituted of a rotary cylinder head 13 a mechanical part of a tape feeding device 17, FM modulator and demodulator 11, 16 and the circuit parts of recording amplifiers 12, 14 and the modulator and demodulator 11, 16 are provided with the digital signal I/O terminals. An optional signal is inputted to an interval measuring circuit 41, to measure the minimum bit interval and the measured value is inputted to a voltage level control circuit 43 to set up respective voltage levels so that the FM-modulated period corresponding to a low voltage level becomes the integer times the minimum bit interval. Thereby, a digital signal can be directly recorded by switching a digital signal I/O terminal and a video signal terminal fitted to the modulator and demodulator 11, 16, so that the recording density can be increased.
