PURPOSE:To reproduce an information signal from a detected area for a prescribed period so as to reproduce the leading part of all programs only by one operation by detecting the leading parts of respective programs for all information signals by using reproduced signals based upon a rotary head while scanning a tape-like recording medium in its longitudinal direction. CONSTITUTION:A recording instruction from the operation part 11 of a tape recorder and the specification of a recording area are received by a system controller 12 and a capstan control circuit 13 rotates a capstan 14 to travel a magnetic tape 1. On the other hand, area specification data are generated from an area specifying circuit 15, the rotational phase of a rotary cylinder 2 is detected by a rotational position detector 16 and a phase detecting pulse is applied to a gate pulse generating circuit 17, a timing generating circuit 18 and a leading part detecting part 23. The leading parts of respective programs for all the information signals are detected by the circuit 23 by using the reproduced signals obtained from the rotary heads 3, 4.
