PURPOSE:To effect the slow combustion quickly and completely, by providing a flame propagation accelerating channel for accelerating the propagation of combustion flame from an auxiliary combustion chamber to a main combustion chamber in the direction downstream of a swirl in the auxiliary combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:A piston head 1 is recessed to form a main combustion chamber 2 and an auxiliary combustion chamber 3 in juxtaposed communication with each other. A fuel injection nozzle 4 is provided to inject a fuel into the combustion chambers 2 and 3. A bank portion 16 formed on the downstream side of a swirl S generated in the auxiliary combustion chamber 3 is linearly cut away along a tangent connecting the peripheral walls of the combustion chambers 2 and 3 to thereby enlarge an opening portion 18 on the downstream side of the swirl S, thus forming a flame propagation accelerating channel 17. Accordingly, the combustion flame in the auxiliary combustion chamber 3 is inducted and propagated along the swirl S into the main combustion chamber 2 to thereby ignite and burn a premixed gas and a fuel film injected and vaporized in the main combustion chamber 2.
