PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin consisting of a specific repeating unit, having intrinsic viscosity of >=a specific value, high glass transition temperature and yet low dielectric constant and water vapor absorption, by polymerizing a diphenyl-substituted aromatic halophenol in the presence of an alkali. CONSTITUTION:A diphenyl-substituted aromatic halophenol (e.g. 4-fluoro-3',5'- diphenyl-4'-hydroxybenzophenone, etc.) shown by formula I (X is halogen) or an alkali metallic salt thereof is polymerized in the presence of an alkali [preferably alkali metallic (bi)carbonate] to give the aimed diphenyl-substituted aromatic polyether ketone consisting of a repeating unit shown by formula II and having >=0.15 intrinsic viscosity. The compound shown by formula I as a starting raw material is a novel substance and, for example, is produced by subjecting a p-halogenobenzoyl chloride and 2,6-diphenylphenol to Friedel- Crafts reaction.
