PURPOSE:To certainly prevent the knocking on switching by properly setting the ignition timing even in the transition in switching the intensity of intake swirl, in the determination of the ultimate ignition timing through the interpolation from the ignition timing of a memory means. CONSTITUTION:An ignition timing controller is equipped with an operation state detecting means, swirl control means, ignition timing memory means, ignition timing reading-out means, and an ignition timing determining means. The engine operation state is detected by the operation state detecting means. The swirl control means adjusts the intensity of the intake swirl according to the operation state of the engine. The ignition timing memory means memorizes each ignition timing in a plurality of operation states corresponding to the operation states of the engine, and sets the ignition timing in the region where the intensity of the swirl is weakly controlled and which is close to the region where the intensity of swirl is intensified, to the delay angle side. The ignition timing reading-out means read out the corresponding ignition timing from the region close to the engine operation state at present, and determines the ultimate ignition timing.
