PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer useful as materials for sealing electronic parts, having high melt viscosity, by reacting an alkali metallic sulfide with a dihalogen aromatic compound in an organic amide solvent in the presence of water, adding water, carrying out reaction at high temperature and further treating a reaction product with a strong acid. CONSTITUTION:1mol alkali metallic sulfide is reacted with 1-2mol dihalogen aromatic compound in the presence of 0.5-2.4mol water at 180-235 deg.C in such a way that conversion ratio is >=50mol% theoretical necessary amount and melt viscosity [measured at 310 deg.C at 10,000(sec)<-1> shear rate] of formed polymer is <5 poise, 2.5-7.0mol water based on 1mol alkali metallic sulfide is added to the reaction system, the reaction system is heated to 250-290 deg.C and the reaction is continued in such a way that melt viscosity of formed polymer is five times as high as that at the first stage and is <=300 poise. A polymer is separated from the reaction mixture and treated with a strong acid solution at pH<2 at 0-200 deg.C for 1-500min to give the aimed polymer having <=50ppm alkali metal content and 10-300 poise melt viscosity.
