For the support in underground mining, composite mats are provided which can be used both in the roadway and at the longwall face because they have mat locks or connections of appropriate design. To this end, the hooks are formed by folds at one longitudinal-bar end or mat end and by curves at the opposite longitudinal-bar end. The new mat to be installed in each case can easily be hung into the existing mat via the curves so that an advantageous use results especially during the withdrawal of faces. A cross-bar section rising above the longitudinal bar on both sides is arranged at the bottom of each curve, and in addition the continuous cross bar arranged to run in the mat plane and allocated to the opposite longitudinal-bar end is bent in a U-shape at the spacing of the longitudinal bars in such a way as to form a lug. <IMAGE>
