PURPOSE:To decrease a test time by detecting it when a magnetic head nearly contacts a magnetic tape and moving the magnetic head in the direction of the magnetic tape by a preset optimum projecting quanity from the detection position. CONSTITUTION:A DC signal is sent to a magnetic head 101 from a signal generating circuit 20 while a rotating body 10 turns once, a waveform signal is sent during the next one rotation and a reproducing signal from the head 101 is fed to a reproducing signal amplifier circuit 22 during the further next one rotation. A pulse motor 17 is driven based on a control command from a operation circuit 26 so as to approach gradually the head 101 supported by a support jig 15 to a tape 100 set to the rotating body 10. When the head 101 contacts slightly the tape 100, the reproducing signal is detected by a reproducing signal detection circuit 23. The circuit 26 moves the head 101 in the direction of the tape 100 by the preset optimum projecting quantity from the detection position in receiving the detection signal. Thus, the head is moved in the optimum projection position in a short time to execute the test.
