A machine for comminuting pieces of wood and the like has a rotating comminuting plate (12) which is free from openings and has a central planar plate section (13) and a conical plate rim section (15), cutter heads (14, 17) being mounted on these plate sections. The comminuting plate (12) runs with low radial play in a lower annular container segment (38) which has screen openings (44) situated above the plate rim edge. The container segment (38) bears a cylindrical main container part (24) which is filled with the material to be comminuted. The granular particles severed from the filled material by the comminuting plate (12) are flung obliquely upwards and outwards from the comminuting plate (12) and, via the screen openings (44), reach a collecting chute (50). This path is blocked for long slivers of wood due to the angle enclosed between the axes of the screen openings (44) and the plate rim section (15). <IMAGE>
