PURPOSE:To permit the use of a simplified luminescent lamp as a light source, by providing a light transmission hole adjacent to each sensor on a sensor line. CONSTITUTION:Light 10 emitted from a luminescent lamp 9 passes through a light transmission hole 3 opened in the vicinity of a sensor 2 provided on an insulating substrate 1, and projects on an object 8. And intense or feeble reflected light 11 according to the darkness/brightness of a character, or an image written on the surface of the object 1, is generated, then a light quantity is supplied to the sensor 2. Thus, by providing the light transmission hole in the vicinity of the sensor, it is possible to read one point of the object without using a lens. Furthermore, it is not necessary to generate the intense light from the light source enabling the simplified luminescent lamp to be used, and furthermore, an accurate reading can be performed even by non-linear light.
