PURPOSE:To simplify the constitution around a gantry and ladle cap and to shorten the stroke of an electrode lifting device by providing the ladle lifting device to a refining device consisting of the ladle, ladle cap and arc heater. CONSTITUTION:The refining device is constituted of the ladle 1 to contain a molten metal 7, the ladle cap 2 to cover the upper part thereof, the electrode lifting device 3 to hold and lift the electrodes 6 for heating and the ladle lifting device 4 to lift the ladle 1 as main parts. The cap 2 is fixed to the gantry 5 and electrode holes 9 are opened to the upper part of the cap to permit lifting of the electrodes 6. The gantry 5 can be horizontally moved by wheels 10 while holding the cap 2 and the device 3 at the time of setting and removing the ladle 1. The cap 2 can be fixed and the need for the lifting device of the cap 2 is eliminated by providing the ladle lifting device 4 and therefore, the constitution of the device is simplified. The lifting stroke necessary for arc heating is divided to the strokes of the devices 3, 4, by which the stroke of the device 3 is shortened.
