A two stage extruder comprises a first, vertical extruder and a second, horizontal extruder with the working chambers of the two stages connected by a passage (32) and off-set from one another so that each lies at a tangent to the other in a region which is a lower outlet region of the vertical stage and a drawing in region of the horizontal stage; the vertical stage has a plasticising portion with a planetary arrangement (18 22 23), a screw shaft (11) supported in a lower axial pressure bearing (41) and a butting ring (24) for the planetary spindles (23) disposed on the screw shaft (11). A lower cylindrical liner (29) for the vertical stage (6) has an aperture (31) therein and the effective size of the connecting passage (32) can be adjusted by rotating the liner (29). <IMAGE>
