PURPOSE:To attain the efficient use of a printing ribbon, by a method wherein a printing character pattern immediately before and the next printing character pattern are read and compared and control is performed so that a printing ribbon is fed prior to printing the next character when there is no superposed part but is not fed when there is the superposed part. CONSTITUTION:When the printing data of one character is inputted from a keyboard 2, CPU 30 reads corresponding pattern data wherein a region is divided into memory 33 to write the same in a B-register 41 and a printer performs printing. Next, if printing data is inputted from the keyboard 2, CPU 30 similarly reads the corresponding character pattern data from the pattern memory 33 to write the same in an A-register 40. CPU 30 compares the pattern data of both registers 40, 41 and drives a ribbon feed motor 22 prior to printing the next character when there is a superposed part and feeds a printing ribbon but does not feed said ribbon when there is no superposed part. By this method, the printing ribbon can be used efficiently.
