PURPOSE:To enable the echo of a ultrasonic wave to be displayed with a number of colors on a color display by a simple circuit structure by taking echo from a buffer RAM in a CPU and adding three color codes to the echo data to write them in an image memory. CONSTITUTION:Echo data to which reflected wave signals from the underwater received by a receiver 3 and A/D-converted 4 are written in a buffer RAM 7 at every prescribed time in accordance with a depth range until a predetermined number of bits is reached. The echo data that reach the predetermined number of bits are taken in by a CPU from the buffer RAM 7 and added with three color codes to be written in an image memory 8. The control of taking in the echo data from an A/D converter 4, writing the echo data in the buffer RAM 7, taking in the echo data therefrom and writing the echo data in the image memory 8 is performed by the CPU and picture image data with the color codes read from the image memory 8 are displayed on a color display 12.
