PURPOSE:To freely control the distribution of diameter-direction magnetic properties in a magnet, by regulating the compressive strain of a billet composed of Mg-Al-C magnetic alloy so that it is higher in the outside peripheral part than in the inside peripheral part in the simultaneous compression working of two kinds of billets. CONSTITUTION:Billets 2, 3 composed of metallic material are allowed to exist in the hollow part of the hollow billet 1 consisting of Mn-Al-C magnetic alloy. The surfaces of punches 4 and 5 to be in contact with the billets 1-3 are formed into inclined planes instead of level planes. Compression working is carried out in the axial direction of the hollow billet 1 at 530-830 deg.C by the use of the above punches 4 and 5 until the two kinds of billets come into contact with each other or to a further extent so that compressive strain of the hollow billet 1 is higher in the outside peripheral part than in the inside peripheral part. In this way, the Mn-Al-C alloy magnet can be manufactured.
