PURPOSE:To promote the decomposition reaction of propionic acid and to prevent an acidic rancidity phenomenon, by a method wherein propionic acid decomposing bacteria are cultured to be replenished and supplied into a methane fermentation tank and hydrogen is consumed by methane producing bacteria to form methane gas. CONSTITUTION:A medium for the selective culture of propionic acid decomposing bacteria containing propionic acid and butyric acid is supplied to a medium conditioning tank 1 where medium components are dissolved and mixed, and subjected to bubbling treatment by inert gas sent from a gas bomb 4 through an air diffusion means 3 to perform deoxidation. Thereafter, the medium is supplied to a seed bacteria culture tank 6 through a pump 5 and mixed with seed bacteria by a mechanical stirrer 7. Said seed bacteria contain an anaerobic fatty acid decomposing bacteria group containing propionic acid decomposing bacteria group and a methane producing bacteria group as main bacteria, and propionic acid and butyric acid in the medium are decomposed by said seed bacteria while the generated methane gas is stored in a gas holder 8.
