For drawing off a continuously arriving thread and for discharging it into the waste, a unit having a conical winding body (10) is used. The winding body (10) is mounted in a cantilevered manner and is driven at a circumferential speed which is higher than the thread running speed. The thread is laid tangentially onto the winding body (10) and then slips off towards the thin end of the winding body (10) in turns. The thread is discharged through suitable air channels. <IMAGE>
