PURPOSE:To easily obtain rock wool having high quality and performance at a low cost, by forming wool from a molten specific amorphous waste. CONSTITUTION:An amorphous waste (A) generated in the production of synthetic gas by the partial oxidization of coal and containing e.g. <=65(wt)% SiO2, >=15% Al2O3, >=5% CaO and <=5% MgO is crushed to a particle diameter of <=3mm or a Blaine specific surface area of >=1,000cm<2>/g. The crushed waste is compounded with (B) a Ca-containing raw material (e.g. limestone powder) and/or (C) an Mg-containing raw material (e.g. magnesite) and the mixture is melted in a melting furnace at 1,300-1,450 deg.C to attain a viscosity of 5-15 poise and fibrillated e.g. by a rotary disk method to obtain rock wool having fiber diameter of >=10mu. The amount of the component B or C is selected to give a rock wool having a Ca content of 5-35% in terms of CaO or an Mg content of 0.1-20% in terms of MgO. |
