A shoe press with preferably pneumatically actuated pressing cylinder has a pressing cushion arranged on its piston rod and an electric control with actuating arrangement for the pressing cylinder. For a predetermined safety period, the pressing cylinder travels back out of the pressing direction in the opposite direction, if the actuation of the actuating arrangement is interrupted. Only after the predetermined safety time has been exceeded does the pressing cylinder remain in its pressing position.
