A torque converter 9 has a clutch 15 for mechanically connecting the input 10 and output 13 sides which is engaged and the fuel injector or carburettor fuel supply to the engine is stopped during speed reduction when the engine speed or the vehicle speed is over a predetermined value under a no load condition of the engine, such as during deceleration from a high speed. The clutch 15 is released first at the predetermined speed and then the fuel supply to the engine is restarted when the engine speed or vehicle speed drops to a predetermined lower value or after a time delay. ……
