摘要 PURPOSE:The titled composition, having negative dielectric anisotropy and the spontaneous polarization thereof within a specific range, capable of driving without superposing high frequency and with high contrast, high speed of response and useful for matrix display devices, etc. CONSTITUTION:A composition having -1--6, preferably -2--5 difference in dielectric constant between the major axis direction of molecules and the minor axis direction thereof and 3-100 spontaneous polarization value. The above-mentioned composition is preferably obtained by using compounds expressed by formulas I-III, etc., in combination so as to satisfy the above- mentioned condition. The composition is used as a liquid crystal layer 4 of an AC driving electrooptical display device prepared by nipping the liquid crys tal layer 4 between transparent substrates (1a) and (1b) having a pair of electrodes consisting of an electrically conductive membranes (2a) and (2b) and placing polarizing plates (6a) and (6b) on the outside of the above-mentioned liquid crystal layer 4.
