PURPOSE:To improve the traveling property, wear resistance, durability, and corrosion resistance of the title magnetic recording medium by forming a topcoat layer consisting of the perfluoroalkyl ester of a thiolic acid and a rust preventive agent on a ferromagnetic metallic thin film which is the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The perfluoroalkyl ester of a thiolic acid is obtained by esterifying a perfluorocarboxylic acid which is solid at ordinary temp. with a mercaptan, hence the m.p. is lowered, the lubricating effect is extended to a low-temp. region, and a rust preventive effect is also provided by the introduction of a sulfur element. Since the perfluoroalkyl ester of a carboxylic acid has a good low-temp. characteristic, the ester is appropriately used along with the perfluoroalkyl ester of a thiolic acid to obtain a lubricant. A ferromagnetic metallic thin film 2 is formed on a nonmagnetic carrier 1 and the topcoat layer 3 consisting of a mixture of a lubricant and a rust preventive agent is provided on the surface, or a rust preventive layer 3a consisting of a rust preventive agent is firstly coated on the surface and then a lubricant layer 3b consisting of a lubricant contg. the perfluoroalkyl ester of a thiolic acid is coated. |
