PURPOSE:To obtain the title horizontally oriented recording medium having an excellent recording characteristic by controlling the coercive forces measured at angles of 0 deg. and 90 deg. to the substrate face to the same value within + or -5% limits, and adjusting the degree of orientation in parallel with the substrate face, namely the ratio Mr/Ms of the residual magnetism to the saturation magnetism, to >=0.65. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic paint contg. plate magnetic powder having an axis easy for magnetization vertical to the plane face is coated on a nonmagnetic substrate, and a magnetic field parallel to the substrate face is impressed to form a magnetic film. The coercive forces Hc measured at angles of 0 deg. and 90 deg. to the magnetic film face in a virtual plane vertical to the magnetic film face and including the relative motion directions of the magnetic film and a magnetic head are controlled to the same value within + or -5% limits, and/or the degree of orientation, namely the ratio Mr/Ms of the residual magnetism parallel to the magnetic film to the saturation magnetism, is adjusted to >=0.65. Consequently, a magnetic recording medium having an excellent recording characteristic and magnetized in a magnetic field parallel to the plane differently from vertical orientation.
