PURPOSE:To manufacture high carbon and strength steel wire rod less in deterioration of workability due to center segregation with good yield by suitably regulating segregation zone in traverse section of wire having a specified compsn. contg. C, Si, Mn and Fe as indispensable components. CONSTITUTION:Wire rod contg. 0.6-1.0% C, 0.1-2.0% Si, 0.3-2.0% Mn, further if necessary, one kind or more among 0.05-1.5% Cr, 0.05-1.5% Ni, 0.01-0.5% Mo, 0.01-0.5% V, 0.01-0.1% of one kind or more among Al, Ti, Nb, Zr and the balance Fe with inveitable impurity is manufactured by continuous casting method. At this time, by selecting casting condition, max. width of segregation zone of C or Mn, exceeding 1.3 times as much as average compsn. of the wire rod, existing in the region from the center of transverse section of the wire rod to >=1/2 of its radius is formed to <=0.01 of diameter of the wire rod.
