PURPOSE:To improve reliability by providing rotary drums having magnetic bodies where magnetic signals are recorded and a magnetoresistance effect element. CONSTITUTION:The rotary drums 2 and 2' having the magnetic bodies 3 and 3' where magnetic signals are recorded are fixed on a shaft 1 at an interval L and the magnetoresistance effect element R is arranged opposite the drums 2 and 2' at small intervals. For example, a motor is fitted on, for example, the driving side of the shaft 1 and a load is fitted on the load side, so that the shaft 1 is twisted by an angle theta=32/piGXL/D<4>XT in proportion to load torque. Here, theta is the angle of the twisting, G is the shearing coefficient (kg/cm<2>), L is the distance (cm) between the drums 2 and 2', and D is the diameter (cm) of the shaft 1. Further, the coefficient G is determined by the material of the shaft 1 and when the distance L and shaft diameter D are determined, the torque T to the angle theta of the twisting is found. This angle theta is obtained by measuring the zero-cross phase difference theta2-theta1 between outputs EA1 and EA2 obtained by the drum 2 and sensor 4, and drum 2' and sensor 4'. Thus, the torque is detected with high reliability.
