In a process for the preparation of ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen the gaseous synthesis mixture is obtained by partial oxidation in the presence of a suitable catalyst at a pressure from 34.55 to 148 atmospheres and at a temperature of 850 degree C to 1200 degree C at the output from the partial oxidation zone, which is followed by the removal of carbon oxides and water from the gaseous effluent from the partial oxidation zone. The air which is used for catalytic partial oxidation is delivered in such quantities that the molar proportion between the hydrogen and the nitrogen in the synthesis gas is 2.5 and 3 to 1, and is enriched with a quantity of oxygen in sufficient proportion for the quantity of oxygen to be sufficient to achieve the level which is required for conversion of the hydrocarbon.
