Retaining block consisting, in a general manner, of a hollow concrete body and intended, in most cases, for the construction of a gravity retaining wall, after assembly of a large number of these blocks and their filling with a weighty material, such as earth or gravel. It is characterised in that at least its upper face is provided with notches 6, 9 in the shape of a wedge, triangle, trapezium, cone or the like, which are arranged in one or more lines which are horizontal and parallel to the wall to be built, and capable of each receiving a wedge key 10, 13 of complementary shape and of height sufficient to project from the block after having been inserted and jammed in the corresponding notch. <IMAGE>
