[Also in Group XXIV] A mechanism for driving a toy comprises a pair of driven shafts each connected to its load through an irreversible worm-and-pinion gearing, a toothed wheel mounted on each driven shaft and driving means adapted for selective engagement in the teeth of the two toothed wheels according to the direction of rotation of a driving shaft. As shown, a reversible electric motor 1 drives through a gear 3 to two gears 6a, 6b freely rotatable upon shafts 4a, 4b separately rotated to perform different operations in the toy, each gear 6a &c. carrying a pawl 7a which in one direction of rotation engages with a ratchet-wheel 5a secured to the associated shaft, the pawls and ratchet-wheels being oppositely directed so that when the motor drives in one direction, one pawl and ratchetwheel overruns while the other transmits drive to its shaft, while when the motor rotates in the opposite direction, the first pawl and ratchet overruns while the second now transmits drive. The two shafts each drive through an irreversible worm-and-pinion gearing (not shown) to their respective loads. As a modification, the pawls and ratchets 5a, 7a are dispensed with and the motor 1 is mounted to one side, the gear 3 meshing an idler gear rotating at the end of a lever turning about the axis of the motor shaft 2. Depending upon the direction in which the motor 1 drives, the idler gear meshes either with the gear 6a or with the gear 6b. A second motor with a further two driven shafts geared thereto according to the invention may be incorporated into the toy. |
