PURPOSE:To improve the reliability and efficiency of processing by detecting plural straight lines as features of a body to be detected and obtaining position information on the body to be detected from the position relation among those straight lines. CONSTITUTION:Only straight line edges parallel to a (y) axis are detected in an input picture 11, 1 is stored in a binary memory 28 as an edge part and 0 is stored as other parts, and information on them are held. Then, necessary information is extracted from the detected straight line edges and compressed. The detected lines are only lines which are almost parallel to the (y) axis, so linear projection data 13 is obtained, but the compressed data are different because of a fine difference in angle among the straight lines. Then, the rotational correction of the data is made to obtain a feature quantity characteristic to the object as the linear projection data 13. Lastly, matching with model data 14 which is prepared is performed so as to know the position of the object from the linear projection data 13.
