Between the lower level where the documents are stored in shelving 1, 2 with cavities and the upper level where these documents are consulted, the link is performed by a single elevator with two superposed platforms 8, 9. During operation, the elevator device presents itself either in front of the movable platform 5 of the transducer performing the picking-up and replacement of the documents in the shelving, or in front of the consultation table 10, with one 8 of its platforms free and the other platform 9 loaded with a container A of documents. The empty platform 8 is first placed at a level in order to take on a container C of documents which is waiting, then the platform 9 is placed at a level in order to unload the container A which it carries. The invention applies to the continuous transfer, between a storage zone and a consultation zone, of containers containing documents or other elements, such as individual safes. <IMAGE>
