The invention relates to power-assisted steering for motor vehicles. An input shaft 8 is connected, via one end, to a steering wheel and via the other end to a gear 10 meshed with a rack 11 constituting part of a continuous control axle 10 which can be coupled, via its opposite ends, to the guiding wheels; another part of the control axle 10 is composed of a worm 14 connected, by the interposition of balls, with a threaded whorl 15 actuated by the shaft of a reversible electric motor 18 which is itself controlled by a threshold comparator 28, whose input is connected to devices measuring the absolute value and sign of the torque exerted on the input shaft 8.
