PURPOSE:To obtain the titled novel composition giving chiral smectic phase in the low temperature range, improved in response quickness and display characteristics, useful for liquid crystal display device, etc., by blending two kinds of optically active liquid crystal compounds having respectively specific structures. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition can be obtained by blending (A) an optically active liquid crystal compound of formula I (R1 is 4-18C straight- chain alkyl or straight-chain alkoxy; R2 is 1-8C straight-chain alkyl; C* is asymmetrical carbon atom; l and m are each 1 or 2) [e.g. p'-(decyloxybiphenyl carboxylic acid p''(2-ethoxypropyloxycarbonyl)phenyl ester] and (B) a second optically active liquid crystal of formula II (R3 is the same as R1, R4 is the same as R2) [e.g. 4(2'-octyloxypropoxy)phenyl-4'-dodecyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxy- late].
