Heat engine. The direct injection diesel engine piston further comprises a thin ring 10, 17 of refractory material joined to the piston crown 2 and extending the outer wall of the piston 1 practically as far as the end of the cylinder 4 neighbouring the cylinder head 44 when the piston is at top dead centre, without coming into contact with the cylinder head 44, a clearance being left between the ring 10, 17 and the cylinder 4, in that the ratio between the thickness of the thin ring 10, 17 and the bore of the cylinder 4 is less than approximately 8%.
