During craping of a paper web by means of mutually engaging craping rolls, overstretching of the paper web material is to be avoided. For this purpose, only a single complete craping groove (a) is initially produced in a first treatment stage a*. In further successive treatment stages b* to f*, craping grooves b to f adjoining this first craping groove (a) are produced flank by flank. One groove flank (b') after the other and in each case adjoining the groove flank (a') produced before is thus effected. <IMAGE>
