PURPOSE:To record and reproduce various coding data with no deterioration of the picture quality by dividing the difference data into plural ranks in response to the valid bit length and handling the difference data as the data on the reference bit length of the corresponding rank. CONSTITUTION:The picture signals are stored temporarily in a fast picture memory 2 and then transferred by DMA to a data controller 4 via an image bus 3. The controller 4 produces the differential data with its compression and adds the constitution code of a block formed with data equivalent to several picture elements. Then the data on each block is transferred to a buffer memory 5 and then to a digital recording medium 6 by DMA. In a reproduction mode the data is transferred to the memory 5 from the recording medium and then the data is transferred to the controller 4 from the memory 5 for each block. Thus the controller 4 restores plural original differential data in read time based on the block code.
