The invention relates to a hydraulic drive system for printing machines, especially sheet-fed rotor printing machines. The aim of the invention is the cost-effective use, free of secondary effects, of three-phase asynchronous motors with squirrel cage, especially of more than 50 kW, for hydraulic drive systems on printing machines. The object of the invention, to provide a hydraulic drive system with three-phase synchronous motors, especially of more than 50 kW, which can be started, without reactions on the electricity network, largely by the use of already existing subassemblies of the machine, is achieved in that a hydraulic auxiliary energy source is connected to the hydraulic generator working as a hydraulic motor and, in the starting state, adjustable to a large displacement volume and, when running at high speed, to a lower displacement volume, and the three-phase asynchronous motor with squirrel cage is connected to a synchronous revolution counter.
