<p>Di(meth)acrylic acid esters of formula (II) (where m and n are 0-5 on average, average value of m+n is 1-10, and R is H or CH3) are novel. Prepn. of (II) involves esterifying (I) with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. In an example, 470.3 pts. wt. addn. condensn. prod. of one mole of tricyclodecane dimethylol and one mole of epsilon caprolactone, 262 pts. acrylic acid, 7.86 pts. sulphuric acid, 1.98 pts. hydroquinone, 364 pts. benzene and 90.6 pts. cyclohexane were heated, and the water produced distilled and condensed together with the solvent. The water was then exclusively eliminated from the reaction system and the solvent recycled to the reaction vessel. When the vol. of the water produced reached 54.6 pts., the reaction mixt. was cooled. The reaction temp. was 81-89 deg.C. The reaction mixt. was dissolved in a mixt. of 809 pts. benzene and 202.4 pts. cyclohexane, which was neutralised with a 20% aq. soln. of caustic soda, followed by washing with 500 pts. per portion of 20% saline soln. three times. The solvent was evapd. off under reduced pressure to yield 523.4 pts. pale yellow liq. Specific gravity at 25 deg.C was 1.105; viscosity at 25 deg.C was 24117 cps, saponification value was 401.3 mg KOH/g; acid value 0.02 mg KOH/g; refractive index at 20 deg.C was 1.4975 and elemental analysis C68.89% and H 8.20%.</p> |
