PURPOSE:To contrive a reduction in the frequency of replacement of an ink ribbon, by a method wherein when an end of an ink ribbon is detected during a printing operation, the printing operation is stopped, a ribbon cassette is shifted in the width direction of the ink ribbon, and the printing operation is restarted while feeding the other ink ribbon. CONSTITUTION:A ribbon cassette 8 enclosing fresh ink ribbons 9a, 9b is fitted to a holder 5. A solenoid 2 is deenergized to lift up the cassette 8, the ribbon 9b is fed to a printing head 4 by a ribbon motor 7, and a printing operation is performed. When printing in one line is finished, the solenoid 2 is energized to lower the holder 5, the ribbon 9a is opposed to the head 4, the ribbon motor 7 is reversely rotated, and the printing operation is restarted. When the end of the ribbon 9a is detected while repeating the above operations, the printing operation is stopped, the solenoid 2 is deenergized to lift up the cassette 8, and the printing operation is continued for residual characters to be printed, while driving the ribbon 9b by the motor 7. |
