PURPOSE:To contrive a higher recording speed and enable a reduction in device size, by a method wherein when the length of a recording paper is smaller than the length of each color section of an ink ribbon, a thermal recording head and a platen are separated from each other on completion of recording in each color, and a surplus length part of each color section of the ribbon is fed by the time recording in the next color is started. CONSTITUTION:The trailing end of a recording paper is detected when being passed through a detector 44, and the resultant detection signal is sent to a system controlling part, upon which a timer means starts counting time. After a predetermined lapse of time, namely, when the trailing end of the paper 62 reaches a point directly above a heat generating resistor row (which is a recording position) of a thermal recording head 12 or slightly beyond that point, a solenoid 18 is excited through a mechanism- controlling part under the control of the system controlling part, thereby separating the head 12 from a platen roller 11. Simultaneously, an ink ribbon 91 is fed at a high velocity to a point corresponding to the next recording color, e.g., magenta color, and when the leading end of a magenta color section reaches that position, the solenoid 18 is deenergized, whereby the head 12 is pressed against the platen roller 11 through the ribbon 91. |
