PURPOSE:To obtain a silicon-modified polyimide being soluble in an aprotic polar solvent and having excellent heat resistance in spite of its high silicon content, by using a specified bond structure as an unit structure. CONSTITUTION:A silicon-modified polyimide having a bond structure of formula I as a unit structure. In the formula, R and R' are each H or alkyl, B is a residue of a diamine compound and X is a bifunctional group of formula II or III (wherein R1-R4 are each a 1-6 C alkyl). Said silicon-modified polyimide can be produced by reacting a tetracarboxylic dianhydride of formula IV with a diamine of H2N-B-NH2. Because the imide structure of this silicon-modified polyimide is a six-membered one, it is presumable that the ring closure temperature in the production of the polyimide is lower and the efficiency of ring closure is higher and that it is thermally stable because of its low structural strain.
