This device is formed of two tubes 10, 11 mounted so as to slide coaxially, one inside the other, these two tubes each being closed at one of their ends, respectively 10a, 11a and being engaged in each other by their open ends respectively 10b, 11b; each of the two tubes 10, 11 internally carries one of the elements (measurement scale 18, detection device 16) of the displacement sensor; means 13 of the wiper joint type are provided in order to seal the two tubes 10, 11 during their relative sliding, the inner tube 11 being guided in the tube 10 by means of the rolling bearing type. According to a first embodiment, each of the elements 16, 18 of the sensor is mounted fixed in its respective tube 10, 11 and the measurement scale 18 is formed by a succession of rings extending perpendicular to the axis of the device. The measurement scale may also be formed by a rule bearing a flat graduation and one of the elements of the sensor is then mounted so as to rotate inside its respective tube. <IMAGE>
