A prechamber for furnaces for incinerating waste, in particular for incinerating bales of waste, is described, the side of which adjoining the combustion space of the furnace (4) is of essentially open design and which has a filling shaft with a lock (6) formed by movable closure members (7, 8), the closure member (8) being arranged movably between the lock (6) and the prechamber (1) approximately transversely to the plane of the open side of the prechamber and connected to a slide (13) which, in the closure position of this closure member (8), closes the open side of the prechamber (1) and is effective as a heat shield against heat radiation from the combustion space of the furnace (4) (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
