Fluid compositions containing coal, water and flow improvers.

Aq. coal slurries contg. 40-90 wt.% coal contain, based on dry coal wt., 0.1-2 wt.% of a fluidifier (I) and 0.02-1 wt.% of a dispersant (II). (I) is a polyalkoxylated cpd. with a molecular wt. above 4000. (II) is a hydrophilic alkylaryl sulphonate with a molecular wt. of 440 or less. The slurries contain 50-80 (esp. 65-75) wt.% of coal with (a) a unimodal particle size distribution with at least 80 wt.% smaller than 80 microns or (b) a multimodal particle size distribution with 20-60 wt.% of up to 30 micron particles and 40-80 wt.% of 40-200 micron particles.
