PURPOSE:To finely detect an area containing a subject pattern designated out of an input picture with high accuracy by obtaining a distribution pattern of similarity between a target and its nearby area to detect a subject pattern out of the input picture. CONSTITUTION:An area comparator 16 obtains the similarity between a designated subject pattern 2 stored in a certain frame of a picture memory 17 and each part of the input picture data to be checked that is inputted via a TV camera 11 and stored in the memory 17. Then the similarity value of each point of the input picture is written successively at the corresponding points of the memory 17. In other words, the similarity is calculated between the pattern 2 and a mirror area picture pattern 3 of each part of the input picture while shifting successively the positions of those minor areas. Then the similarity obtained for each minor area is written to the memory 17 in response to the position of each minor area. In such a way, a distribution pattern of similarity values of each part of the input picture is formed on the memory 17 against the pattern 2.
